After 20 years in the wedding dress business as a designer and dressmaker, I felt I was on the wrong path. I wanted more nature, less waste and more sustainability, so I transitioned to a full time career as a beekeeper. I now work as a beekeeper and bee advocate and am the founder of Hanna's Bees, recently crowned Best Small Business in Cork in the Best in Cork Awards. Hanna's Bees specialise in sustainable, smart and stylish gifts from the hive; small batch honeys, pure beeswax candles, eco-friendly beeswax wraps and more. Our ideal customers are very aware of the benefits of natural, locally produced products, and look for authentic gifts with provenance, meaning and a story. As ambassador for the Native Irish Honeybee, I help protect and raise awareness about our Native honeybee, a threatened subspecies. My educational work includes lecturing in NUIG, writing for several international publications and through my series 'Bee-Splaining' on social media and through my blog at hannasbees.ie. It is my hope that through this work, I can help raise awareness about bees, biodiversity and sustainability, and I firmly believe than even the smallest change of habit can have a great positive impact in both our own lives and for our planet.
