About Me: My name is Joan McCann, I am the founder of The Code Lab. I have a BSc. in Computer Science and Software Engineering and had an extensive IT career before taking a break to focus on family. With 4 small children, I went in search of children's coding classes in Co Louth and couldn't find any formal lessons, so I started my own. I have been teaching children’s coding in workshops, camps, and schools since 2018, and moved online in 2021, where The Code Lab continues to grow.
About My Business: The Code Lab teaches children to create with technology by coding their own animations and games. We inspire young digital creators by making coding fun, accessible, and engaging. Through workshops, online lessons and events, we empower children aged 7 to 17 to develop creativity, problem-solving skills, and confidence in using technology. At The Code Lab we are passionate about demystifying technology for young people, improving their confidence with technology, and empowering them with digital skills for the future. The Code Lab works with a variety of groups and organisations to bring coding opportunities to young people in Ireland. We deliver workshops for schools, community groups, and other organisations, tailoring each session to meet their needs. Our STEM-focused Schools Coding Programme makes coding more accessible in the classroom, bridging the gap between teachers and technology and providing every child with the opportunity to learn digital skills. Additionally, we are contracted to run large-scale events like DojoMór, a nationwide coding event in Ireland, which engage thousands of young learners through interactive coding experiences. This multifaceted approach ensures The Code Lab makes coding accessible to as many young people as possible.
